Elders Get Renovated Homes at Cherry Hill

Over the past 3 years Oglala Sioux Lakota Housing (OSLH) has worked on renovating the 32 units reserved for the elderly and disabled at the Cherry Hill Complex in Pine Ridge Village. The 600 square foot 1-bedroom units were originally built in the mid 1960s.

We obtained two grants from the Federal Home Loan Bank of DesMoines Affordable Housing Program. A $166,390 grant was used for the two 4-plexes in 2012, and a $480,000 grant was used for the remaining six 4-plexes in 2014. OSLH contributed $65,941 for the 1st project and $92,939 for the 2nd project. The work was done by our own maintenance staff under the supervision of Mr. Robin Condon, Maintenance Director, and Mr. Larry Bear Killer, Assistant Maintenance Director. Construction was completed in November 2015, and final invoicing was completed in February 2016.

Once construction started, crews found damaged framing and other issues, and decided to make the bathrooms larger and more handicapped accessible in all units. Work done on the units included replacing roofs, siding, windows, doors and storm doors on the exterior. On the interior, kitchens were provided with new cabinets, sinks, plumbing, countertops, fridges, stoves, and flooring. Bathrooms received new bath tubs, toilets vanities, sinks, rails for showers, drywall, electrical (outlets, wiring, switches), light fixtures, flooring, trim, and casing. Furnaces, hot water heaters, interior doors, smoke alarms, and floor registers were also replaced.

We would like to give a big thank you to Ms. Peggy Lunzman and Dacotah Bank of Aberdeen, SD for being the member bank that submits our proposals to Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. Without them we would not have been able to obtain the two grants that got the renovations done.
